What are the Benefits of Having a Wireless Weather Station?
After the severe storms and suddenly forming tornadoes, straight line winds, floods and severe thunderstorms, it almost seems silly to ask. But for those who don't know, most professional weather stations have programmable storm alarms. This means that you can set alarms to occur for almost any excessive weather related measurement.
For example, many affordable La Crosse Home Weather Stations will automatically alarm when the barometric pressure falls suddenly. And the La Crosse Swiss Made Barometer tracks almost as perfectly as does the Davis Vantage Pro2 and Davis Vantage Vue for $100's less.
And while it's true that the La Crosse wind speed reporting is far less than ideal, there's nothing wrong with its wind direction reporting. For most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, a weather station that reports accurate barometric pressure and accurate wind direction is at least 80% of the forecast you might make from the data.
When the wind is from the SE, S, or SW and the barometer is falling like a rock, look out for the onset of a weather event. And if the barometer plummets suddenly and continues to plummet with storm alarm after storm alarm, we recommend you immediately grab your NOAA Weather Alert Radio and you immediate fire up your personal copy of Storm Predator on your PC. IF YOU HEAR ANY KIND OF RUMBLING, SEEK APPROPRIATE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. It is likely that a tornado has formed near you and the National Weather Service hasn't issue the NOAA alert yet. WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN PERSONAL WEATHER STATION, DO NOT WAIT FOR THE NOAA BROADCAST. IF WINDS ARE OVER 40MPH AND THE BAROMETER IS PLUMMETING AND YOU HEAR A RUMBLING OR CAN SEE APPROACHING WEATHER THAT APPEARS SEVERE OR THREATENING, GET TO SHELTER FIRST, THEN LISTEN TO YOUR NOAA RADIO OR LOAD YOUR COPY OF STORM PREDATOR.
ALWAYS RESPECT THE NOAA EMERGENCY ALERT WARNINGS. AT LEAST CHECK YOUR OWN DIRECT LINK TO THE WEATHER SATELLITES WITH STORM PREDATOR SOFTWARE THAT'S ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER OR LAPTOP THE MOMENT A NOAA ALERT IS HEARD. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THESE NOAA ALERTS FOR GRANTED. YOUR LIFE IS AT STAKE.
Here's a brief summary of Weather Station benefits:
Home Improvement... Up to the minute weather information will help you plan your home improvements, whether itís painting the house, preparing for winter, or trimming the trees.
Be Prepared for Storms... The storm warning alarms will notify you when dangerous storms are approaching.
Personal Safety... Be aware of dangerous Wind Chill and Heat Index levels.
Professional Safety... Be aware of high winds and rapidly falling barometric pressure that can be an indicator of dangerous weather approaching.
Ensure a Safe Environment for Pets... Remotely monitor the temperature inside the dog house to make sure that it isnít too hot or too cold.
Prevent Growth of Mold and Bacteria...Using digital weather instruments to monitor your home can help you prevent mold and bacteria from growing. This can help you avoid associated health problems and ensure that your stored belongings are safe.
Local Weather Conditions Vary... Weather instruments provide real-time weather data based on whatís happening where you are.
Dependable Operation... Battery operated instruments provide accurate time and weather information through power failures. Many units also include AC power adapters.
Advanced Forecast Icons... Help you decide what to wear for the day. Youíll never be caught without your coat or umbrella again!
Plan Outdoor Events w/ Confidence... A backyard barbeque, a day at the beach, camping, or golfing.
Lawn and Garden Care... Rain gauges monitor recent rainfall so that you know how much or how little to water your lawn and garden.
is the pre-eminent, affordable weather station. Whether you choose the
Vantage Vue or the Vantage Pro2, the accuracy of either exceeds that of
La Crosse. And La Crosse, in our opinion, is the best of the low priced
stations. From our hands on experience, we see fewer failures by far
than that of Honeywell/Meade and Oregon Scientific which have become
relatively notorious for their inability(ies) to maintain connection
with the indoor console. Some of our customers have even speculated to
us that the wireless range of the sensors is questionable. All we know
for sure, is that we have all but ceased offerings of Oregon Scientific
(see warning on the WMR200) and have ceased sales of Honeywell/Meade
weather stations, except for some temp stations like the Honeywell
TE219ELW. Long ago we ceased sales of Chaney, Zephyr, Acurite,
Springfield and P3 for quality and accuracy failures that were too much
for us to handle in support (and frustration for our customers). We
never offered the Thermor home weather stations as we felt they were
just too flimsy to even touch.
Oregon Scientific had a great semi-professional weather station: the
WMR968. It was a staple of our offerings until Ore Sci discontinued the
unit earlier this year (2011). If you can find one and you're looking
for a $200.00 weather station, buy it! Please silicone seal the solar
panels with a very thin bead to prevent water intrusion. That was the
downfall of the 968. Other than that, we enjoyed selling it. But it's
not a Davis for reliability or accuracy. If you can't afford a Davis Vantage Vue or Davis Vantage Pro 2 Weather Station, the La Crosse WS-2812 is your best bet by far these days, in our opinion.
