Description

The modular design of Capricorn 2000 weather stations provides professional-grade data capture, storage and transfer. Designed around the Control Module, this flexible system can easily accept signal inputs from a wide variety of meteorological sensors.

Data is viewed using the Capricorn 2000 Weather Display Console and/or computer weather software connected to the Control Module via dual RS-232 serial ports.

The Control Module is housed in a compact, utility-grade enclosure which includes a data logger storing up to 511 records at user-defined intervals. Dual on-board RS-232 interface ports allow simultaneous connection to CWS proprietary Weather Display Console, modem, or directly to a computer.

The standard system comes with wind speed and direction sensor, barometric pressure sensor, temperature probe, relative humidity probe and self-aspirating radiation shield. Optional sensors include rain gauge, heated rain gauge, soil temperature probe, soil moisture probe, solar radiation (pyranometer) sensor and leaf wetness sensor.

Capricorn 2000 Control Module

Features:

  • Clock (date and time of day)
  • Dual on-board RS-232 interfaces; connect to modem and direct to computer at the same time
  • Uninterruptible modem access
  • Sensor high/low data memory
  • Data Logger (stores up to 511 records at user-defined intervals) sample data log.
  • Powered by +12 VDC (800 mAmp max) transformer suitable for battery or solar power
  • Calculated parameters and alarm functions through optional weather software and/or the Weather Display Console

Barometric Pressure

Housed in the Control Module, the barometric pressure sensor is a silicon shear stress strain gauge. This state-of-the-art sensor integrates on-chip, bipolar op amp circuitry and thin film resistor networks to provide a high level analog output signal and true temperature compensation. The on-chip integration also results in high reliability and accuracy.

Accuracy: ± 0.03 in. Hg over range (at sea level, with temperature between 32° and 182°F (0°- 85°C)

Range: 27 to 33.96 in. Hg

Resolution: 0.01 in. Hg

Temperature

The Capricorn 2000 Weather Station comes standard with one temperature sensor with 50 feet of cable. Up to four temperature sensors can be connected with a maximum of 400 feet combined cable length. These digital, semiconductor-type probes all connect to a single port, reducing susceptibility to noise interference, reducing cost, and increasing accuracy. The sensors are calibrated at the factory traceable to NIST standards.

Accuracy: ± 0.9°F from +14° to 185°F (±0.5°C from -10° to 85°C), ± 3.6°F from -67° to 257°F (±2.0°C from -55° to 125°C)

Resolution: 0.01°F

Wind Direction and Speed

The wind speed and direction sensors use a solid state, infrared optical design to decrease wear and improve reliability. These rugged sensors, with a design incorporating years of experience and testing, are enclosed in a PVC housing surrounding stainless steel parts. These sensors operate in extreme temperature and wind conditions for years.

Features:

  • Wind direction in 16 compass points
  • Wind speed displays as low as 1 mph
  • Flexible sensor positioning (up to 1000 feet/305 meters from console)
  • Quick-disconnect cable connector for easy sensor removal

Wind Speed Accuracy: ± 5% or better from 20 to 125 mph , ± 1 mph from 5 to 20 mph

Wind Speed Range: 0 to 125 mph; 200 km/h 108 knots (higher gusts may be recorded)

Wind Speed Mechanical Threshold: 0.5 mph

Wind Direction Resolution: 16 compass points

Relative Humidity

This optional capacitive relative humidity sensor is compact and easy to use. It can be easily installed in a self-aspirating radiation shield for protection from the sun and rain. This sensor offers long-term stability with minimal drift. Because the sensor is a capacitive device, it will not be affected by surface contamination in unclean environments. Since the sensor element is socketed and laser trimmed it can be easily replaced in the field without any additional calibration. The relative humidity sensor comes with a standard 50-foot cable and a quick disconnect connector.

Type: Capacitance

Accuracy: ± 3% (or better) from 10 to 90% RH at 68° F

Temperature Effect: less than <±1.5% RH from 14° F to 140° F

Stability: ±2% RH over 2 years

Reporting Resolution: 1% RH

Range: 0 to 100%

Rainfall

The tipping bucket electric rain gauge is composed of a complex spun collector funnel with a knife edge that diverts the water to a tipping bucket mechanism. For each tip, a magnet causes an electronic pulse that is recorded. The rainfall sensor is completely automatic - spent water drains out of the bottom of the housing, hence, the instrument requires no servicing.

Accuracy: ±1% at 2 in./hr or less

Resolution: 0.01 inch

Heated rain gauge is available. Please call 1-866-625-8620 for details.

Solar Radiation

This sensor is designed for routine measurement of global hemispherical solar radiation under all weather conditions. The sensor has a rugged uni-body design which houses a high performance silicon photodiode detector mounted beneath a conical shaped (self-cleaning) diffuser. Due to the unique diffuser design, the sensitivity of this sensor is proportional to the cosine of incidence of the incoming solar irradiance, allowing for accurate and consistent measurement.

In addition, this sensor offers a higher nominal sensitivity than most competitive sensors (about 100 mV/Wm-2), thus offering improved signal to noise ratio. Some applications for this sensor are agricultural evapotranspiration estimation, air pollution dispersion, environmental monitoring and education.

Requires the Capricorn 2000MP or 2000EX version of the Control Module

Sensitivity: 100 mV/Wm-2

Spectral Response: 0.4 to 1.1 micro m

Temperature Range: -22 to +158° F (-30 to +70° C)

Response Time: < 1 sec

Max Irradiance: 2000 W/m2

Temperature Dependence: ±0.15% / °C , Cosine Error (0 to 80° C): <10%

Leaf Wetness

Measured with a capacitance grid, this leaf wetness sensor is manufactured by Columbia Weather Systems to provide a precise, high resolution scale - not just wet or dry. It is useful to determine the wetness condition of surfaces including foliage, for example, in preparation for spraying pesticides. The leaf wetness sensor measures the percentage of wetness where 0.5 volts corresponds to wet and 4.4 volts corresponds to dry.

Accuracy: ±5%

Resolution: 0.01 volts
